The GEL Cell Battery is similar to the AGM battery style because the electrolyte is suspended, but different because technically the AGM battery is still considered to be a wet cell. On the other hand, GEL batteries use gel as electrolyte instead of liquid acid. This gel is usually produced by homogeneous dispersion of pyrogenic silica in diluted sulfuric acid. GEL batteries have no liquid inside, the electrolytes is in gel form and stand solid between positive and negative plate inside battery.
Basically GEL batteries have almost all the same advantages of an AGM battery and plus have greater resistance to extreme temperatures, shock, and vibration due to a solid internal texture and a larger quantity of electrolytes they are able to hold. This make them become a better choice for applications under more demanding conditions. GEL batteries also have a long cycle life, and can be revived even if they are left discharged for some time. GEL batteries are best used in VERY DEEP cycle application and may last a bit longer in hot weather applications.
Because of the gel like substance, there is no risk of leakage and they can be used in virtually any position, which greatly increases the number of applications GEL batteries can be used for. They don’t produce hydrogen fumes so you also don’t need to worry about placing them in a special ventilated area while charging them. They are classified as non-hazardous goods, so we don’t have to worry about the air, rail & road transportation. Also the integration to a real life application , for example a household solar system, can be easier by this characteristic.
GEL batteries are maintenance free, provides good electrical reliability and is lighter than the flooded lead acid type. While regular lead acid batteries need a topping charge every six months to prevent the buildup of sulfation, GEL batteries are less prone to sulfation and can sit in storage for longer before a charge becomes necessary. The battery stands up well to low temperatures and has a low self-discharge.
However, we recommend using a good battery charger with gel batteries compatibility to obtain the maximum battery life because GEL batteries are more sensitive to the charging process. If the incorrect battery charger is used on a GEL Cell battery, the performance will be decreased. A good charger will automatically monitor and control the battery charging status and this could help optimize the battery performance.
